Job description

Villagr, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing public school education through art supplies, seeks passionate individuals to join our Board of Directors. This volunteer role is ideal for those committed to fostering equitable educational opportunities, regardless of professional background. Board members will shape strategic direction, advocate for systemic change, and collaborate with stakeholders to amplify Villagr’s mission.

In full transparency, we’ve been developing the service over the last 2 years as a self-funded side project with no expectation of pay, and we’re ramping up to raise donations.

Overview

As a Volunteer Board Member, you will play a pivotal role in guiding Villagr’s vision to support public schools and underserved students. No prior expertise in education or nonprofit management is required—only a proactive mindset, dedication to public education, and a willingness to learn. We seek individuals who can generate innovative solutions, engage deeply with community needs, and contribute to governance with enthusiasm and creativity.

We ask for a commitment of at least 12 months, with an expectation of 5 or fewer hours of work per week. If you are self-motivated, work well independently, enjoy collaborating with others, and can dedicate quality time regularly to help achieve team goals, we’d love to hear from you.

Qualifications
  • Passion for Public Education: Demonstrated commitment to equity in education through volunteer work, advocacy, or personal experience.
  • Proactive & Self-Driven: Ability to research issues, propose solutions, and follow through independently. Willingness to learn new skills.
  • Collaborative Spirit: Willingness to work constructively with diverse stakeholders, including fellow board members, educators, and community leaders.
  • Creativity & Adaptability: Eagerness to explore unconventional ideas and adapt strategies based on feedback or changing circumstances.
Commitment
  • Location: Based around San Jose, Bay Area, but work remotely and on your schedule. Minimum commitment of 5 hours per week (often less).
  • Attend bi-weekly board meetings, with frequency potentially changing during campaign periods.
  • Communication mainly via Slack, email, and conference calls.
  • Minimum 12-month commitment.
  • This is a non-paid position.
Benefits of Serving
  • Skill Development: Gain experience in nonprofit governance, strategic planning, and community advocacy.
  • Networking: Connect with educators, policymakers, and activists passionate about educational equity.
  • Impact: Contribute directly to initiatives supporting students and teachers in public schools.

Villagr values diversity and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds, including current or former students, parents, and educators. This role offers a unique opportunity to create meaningful change and grow as a leader. If you’re passionate about reimagining public education, we invite you to join us.
