Responsibilities

  • Perform electroencephalographic examinations.
  • Select electrode montages to obtain recordings and manage artifacts.
  • Monitor additional signals such as EMG, ECG, EOG, and respiration.
  • Observe patient with video equipment and ensure alignment of EEG and tape.
  • Set up patient for bedside continuous monitoring with video when indicated.
  • Instruct nursing staff on event button usage and video care.
  • Abstract relevant clinical information from records.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) Technicians use specialized equipment and processes to monitor a patient’s nervous system activity. They set up, perform, and monitor EEG tests which record the electrical activity of a patient’s brain over time. EEG Technicians work under the supervision of epileptologists, neurologists, or other doctors.

This is a PRN role. A caregiver in this position will work 7:00am to 11:00pm with possible weekend requirements.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:
  • Perform electroencephalographic examinations.
  • Select predetermined electrode combinations (montages) to obtain recordings, recognize artifacts and take appropriate steps to eliminate them.
  • Monitor on the same apparatus, other variables such as electromyograms, electrocardiograms, electro-oculograms, respiration, etc.
  • Observe patient with video recording equipment, ensure EEG and tape are lined up exactly, and check focus, lighting and microphone.
  • Set-up patient for continuous monitoring at the bedside with video, if indicated.
  • Instruct nursing caregivers on pushing event button and care of videos.
  • Abstract relevant information from the patients' clinical record and obtain additional information.
  • Successfully obtain the American Board of Registration for Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) credentialing for a Registered EEG Technologist (R. EEG T.) within two years of hire.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
  • Associate’s degree in electroneurodiagnostics or a related patient care field OR two years of direct patient care experience.
  • Technologist must successfully obtain the ABRET (American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists) credentialing for R. EEG T. (Registered EEG Technologist) within two years of hire into this position.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross certification required.
  • Two years direct patient care experience may substitute for the Associate's Degree requirement.
  • Completion of an EEG Technician Trainee Program
Physical Requirements:
  • Manual dexterity in order to place electrodes precisely and to operate recording equipment.
  • Ability to push and maneuver EEG machine weighing 320 pounds and Evoked Potential machine weighing 420 pounds.
  • Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
  • Requires some exposure to communicable disease or body fluids.
Personal Protective Equipment:
  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
Pay Range

Minimum hourly: $28.00

Maximum hourly: $28.00
