Cardinal Point Captains, Inc. (CPC) seeks an experienced captain to provide vessel support for the NOAA CINMS in Santa Barbara, CA. The role operates on the 62’ Shearwater and 28’ Minke vessels, conducting scientific research, monitoring, and outreach missions while maintaining vessels.

The ideal candidate will navigate and maintain small boats, respond to emergencies, and coordinate repairs. Requires USCG license (100t+), First Aid/CPR/AED, and NOAA vessel experience; travel may be involved.

Qualifications

  • Active USCG license (100 tons or above).
  • Current First Aid, CPR and AED certifications.
  • Ability to work with scientists, natural resources managers, and educators.
  • Experience maintaining marine engines and systems; troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure safe navigation and mechanical operation of vessels at all times.
  • Respond to shipboard emergencies and participate in drills.
  • Maintain vessels per NOAA Small Boat Program requirements and assess weather conditions.
  • Coordinate repairs and supervise engineering work as required.
  • Verify cruise and float plans and communicate with shore contacts.
  • Conduct pre-departure checklists and safety briefings.
  • Operate deck equipment (A-frame, winch, capstan, crane, diver compressor).
  • Document vessel activities in ship's log.
  • Be available for emergency responses.
