Job summary

North Carolina State University seeks a Journey Utilities Plant Operator for the night shift to operate and monitor campus utilities systems, including electricity, steam, hot water, and chilled water. The role supports the Cogeneration facilities and requires a safety-minded, dependable, mechanically inclined individual.

Typical shifts are 12 hours, 3-4 days per week, from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM, with potential variation based on organizational needs.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalency; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Maintains required certification(s).
Valid driver’s license required; NC license within 60 days of hire and maintained as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

Operate and monitor central utility systems providing electricity, steam, hot water and chilled water across campus.
Troubleshoot equipment, perform inspections, and help maintain safe, efficient operations.
Inspect plant equipment (boilers, chillers, fuel gas compressors, pumps, cooling towers).
Work under shift supervisor to optimize plant performance and address operational challenges.
Lift and transport materials up to 60 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks outdoors.
Communicate with supervisors, coworkers, and the public; follow instructions.
