Job summary

University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Psychiatric Nursing Assistant I to support the Nursing team in patient care under the supervision of Registered Nurses. The role is based in the Neurobehavioral Psychiatry Unit at John Pappajohn Pavilion (JPP) on campus in Iowa City.

Responsibilities include collaborative care planning, accurate documentation, patient hygiene assistance, vital signs, safety, and crisis intervention. Previous MH patient care and CNA certification are highly desirable.

Qualifications

• Ability to read, write and follow instructions.
• Experience defusing volatile situations is desirable.
• Be a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
• Previous patient care in a Mental Health setting is highly desired.

Responsibilities

• Establish therapeutic relationships with patients, families and multi disciplinary team.
• Participates in planning patient care appropriate for patient's condition and age.
• Documents patient behavior in a factual, legible manner and reports to the RN.
• Maintains patient safety and security by providing physical care and assistance; follows precautions.
• Provides supervision of patients during activities and intervenes in crises.
• Performs patient personal hygiene tasks (bathing, feeding, dressing, grooming, oral care).
• Take temperature, pulse and blood pressure.
• Clean equipment and bedside areas; set up rooms for admission.
• Transport patients and equipment as needed; stock rooms and nursing unit.
• Perform basic CPR as required; maintain patient confidentiality.
