Job summary

The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a part-time Psychiatric Nursing Assistant to support the Nursing team in providing patient care under RN supervision. Located on the Iowa City campus, the role entails direct patient assistance, vital signs, and maintaining safety and cleanliness within the unit.

Candidates should have CNA certification and strong communication skills; prior mental health patient care is desirable.

Qualifications

• Ability to read, write and follow instructions.
• Be a Certified Nursing Assistant.
• Strong written communication skills with experience providing customer service relations.
• Previous patient care experience in a Mental Health setting is highly desired.

Responsibilities

• Establish therapeutic relationships with patients, families and multi disciplinary team.
• Plan patient care appropriate for patient's condition and age.
• Document patient behavior in a factual, legible manner and reports to the registered nurse.
• Maintain patients’ safety and security by providing physical care and assistance; follows Standard precaution.
• Provide supervision of patients during activities and intervene in crises.
• Perform patient personal hygiene tasks including bathing, toileting, feeding, dressing, grooming and oral care.
• Take vital signs (temperature, pulse, blood pressure).
• Clean equipment and bedside areas; maintain nursing unit.
• Set up rooms for patient admission and transport patients as needed.
• Transport equipment, specimens and supplies and stock patient rooms.
• Perform basic CPR as required.
