Job summary

Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre is seeking a Phlebotomy Technician Lab Assistant II for night shifts to collect, accession, and process patient specimens in the Laboratory Medicine department. The role involves ensuring accurate labeling, safety, and timely delivery of specimens.

The position requires venipuncture skills, CLIA knowledge, and good communication. It also offers opportunities to mentor new staff and participate in ongoing competency exams and continuing education.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 1 year related phlebotomy experience or in a related field (e.g., CNA, MA, CMA).
• Valid ASCP Certified Phlebotomy Technician certification or ASCP-approved program graduate.
• Knowledge of CLIA guidelines, specimen accessioning, and laboratory safety.
• Ability to perform venipuncture and skin puncture under supervision.
• Strong communication, organizational, and troubleshooting skills.
• Willingness to complete competency exams, training, and continuing education.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipunctures and skin punctures per CLSI guidelines.
• Accession specimens accurately to ensure correct identification.
• Handle potentially infectious specimens safely and comply with regulations.
• Assess specimen suitability and resolve discrepancies.
• Record pre-analytical data and troubleshoot missing specimens.
• Process specimens with centrifugation, labeling, and delivery to testing areas.
• Navigate computer systems, maintain logs, and perform QC and disinfection.
• Provide phlebotomy coverage for multiple sites and mentor new staff.
