Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a dedicated night shift caregiver to monitor high‑risk patients, perform vital signs and assist with daily activities in a busy hospital unit. The role emphasizes clear communication with RNs, safe patient handling, and adherence to safety protocols.

Qualifications

Must read, write and communicate in English clearly.
Basic computer skills required for charting and reporting.
Familiarity with basic medical terminology is expected.
Ability to remain calm under stress or in emergency situations.

Responsibilities

Provides clear, timely communication to the RN regarding observations and changes seen in patients.
Provides constant observation of high-risk patients as assigned by the Resource Nurse or designee.
Participates in the development and maintenance of a safe environment and utilizes interventions to de-escalate patients.
Assists patient with daily living activities such as personal hygiene, ambulating, meals and nourishment.
Assists in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients using proper safety techniques.
Maintains patient safety by performing safety checks and following restraint policies when needed.
Takes and records vital signs and measures patients' weights and heights.
Performs EKGs, POC tests, and bladder scanning; collects and prepares specimens for transport to lab.
Performs other unit-specific procedures and prepares equipment as directed.
Assists RN with treatments by preparing patient and supplies, providing emotional support.
Observes and records intake and output, and assists with ostomy care as directed.
Demonstrates respectful, culturally appropriate communication with patients, staff and visitors.
Replenishes patient and unit supplies and coordinates with resources as needed.
Keeps current with hospital/unit changes and responds to communications.
Reports to supervisors and participates in ongoing quality and safety initiatives.
