Job summary

Qualifications

• Associates degree in medical technology or chemical, physical or biological science required.
• Bachelors degree in medical technology or chemical, physical or biological science preferred.
• Proficient in performing high-complexity testing.
• Able to maintain quality assurance and regulatory compliance.
• Ability to work flexible shifts as needed.

Responsibilities

• Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization
• Conducts chemical analysis of body fluids to determine normal/abnormal components.
• Analyzes laboratory findings to check the accuracy of the results.
• Enters data from analysis of medical tests and clinical results into computer for storage.
• Operates, calibrates and maintains equipment used in quantitative and qualitative analysis and computer-controlled analyzers.
• Establishes and monitors quality assurance programs and activities to ensure the accuracy of laboratory results.
• Sets up, cleans and maintains laboratory equipment.
• Provides technical information about test results to physicians, family members and researchers.
• Collects and studies blood samples to determine the number of cells and compatibility for transfusion; uses microscopic techniques.
• Analyzes samples of biological material for chemical content or reaction.
• Identifies patient and labels all specimens with correct information.
• Performs high-complexity testing.
• Responds to results with STAT/NOW/timed specimen statuses.
• Alters methods and procedures according to age-specific guidelines.
• Prepares reagents for daily operations and performs maintenance.
• Ensures adequate supplies for testing.
• Notifies nursing/physician of critical values with documentation.
• Maintains current documentation standards and policies.
• Interacts with Laboratory Manager, Pathologist and staff; other customers.
• Submits abnormal results to Pathologist.
• Maintains knowledge of policy and regulatory requirements.
• Presents records to accrediting inspectors as requested.
• Demonstrates flexibility and teamwork under stress.
• Offers support to co-workers.
• Manages and operates lab equipment safely.
• Consults with other departments to improve patient care.
• Assists in compiling data for reports promptly.
• Reviews pending reports and resolves outstanding specimens.
• May work shifts other than assigned to ensure staffing.
