Job summary

The University of Rochester is seeking a part-time Specimen Receiving technician to handle pre-analytical processing of patient specimens at the SMH laboratory. You will register patient information in HIS, verify demographics, and prioritize specimen handling to meet turnaround times around the clock.

Ideal candidates have an Associate degree or some college in science, plus customer service experience and basic knowledge of medical terminology.

Qualifications

• Associate's degree or some college level course work in science or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of education, experience or certification.
• Customer service experience preferred.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy/physiology a plus.

Responsibilities

• Receives specimens from inpatient and outpatient locations via couriers or pneumatic tube station.
• Registers patient information into HIS.
• Identifies and registers patient billing information.
• Manages sample archive storage and disposal as per guidelines.
• Pre-analytical processing of specimens and ensuring specimen integrity.
• Checks and updates patient demographics in LIS and HIS.
• Provides routine information about test requirements and turnaround times.
• Supports technologists in pre-analytical tasks and equipment as needed.
