JOB SUMMARY

The NICU Manager is responsible for the overall operation and delivery of patient care within the comprehensive, multi-level neonatal unit, maintaining accountability for the safety, quality, and well-being of patients on a twenty-four-hour basis. Provides leadership and direction for the clinical, operational, and administrative functions of the department, including staffing, resource management, staff performance, quality improvement, regulatory compliance, and implementation of organizational and departmental policies and procedures. Plans, directs, coordinates, and evaluates nursing practice and departmental operations to support safe, effective, and high-quality patient care. Collaborates with physicians, nursing leadership, ancillary departments, and other members of the healthcare team to promote coordinated and efficient patient care. Provides leadership and direction for all NICU personnel while promoting professional development, effective communication, accountability, and continuous improvement within the department.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. 1. Provides overall leadership and direction for the NICU and maintains accountability for clinical practice, patient care, department operations, and administrative functions.
2. 2. Directs and evaluates the delivery of patient care within the NICU to promote patient safety, quality outcomes, regulatory compliance, and effective use of organizational resources.
3. 3. Establishes departmental goals, objectives, priorities, and performance expectations and develops and implements short- and long-term plans to address changing patient care needs, staffing requirements, technology, resources, and organizational priorities in alignment with organizational goals and strategic priorities.
4. 4. Develops, implements, reviews, and maintains NICU policies, procedures, standards, and processes in collaboration with appropriate clinical and organizational leadership.
5. 5. Maintains accountability for compliance with organizational policies, professional standards of practice, applicable federal and state regulations, CMS requirements, accreditation standards, and other regulatory requirements related to patient safety and quality of care.
6. 6. Evaluates overall departmental performance and clinical outcomes and maintains processes to monitor clinical quality, patient safety events, patient experience, staff performance, and other departmental indicators. Uses available data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement and develops, implements, and monitors strategies to address identified concerns.
7. 7. Provides leadership for departmental and organizational performance improvement initiatives, including data collection, development of action plans, implementation of interventions, and evaluation of outcomes.
8. 8. Analyzes and communicates clinical, operational, and quality data to nursing and organizational leadership to support informed decision-making, strategic planning, and continuous improvement.
9. 9. Determines departmental staffing needs and develops staffing plans to support patient acuity, census, required skill mix, patient safety, productivity, and operational needs. Maintains accountability for departmental scheduling processes and staffing resources to ensure appropriate coverage and alignment with approved FTE allocations and required skill mix.
10. 10. Reviews staffing, productivity, overtime, absenteeism, turnover, and other workforce metrics and develops strategies to address identified trends, concerns, and opportunities for improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification: Graduate of an accredited nursing program. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. Current, active, and unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Idaho. Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), and S.T.A.B.L.E. certifications, with renewal maintained as required. Professional specialty certification, such as RNC-NIC (Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing), is strongly preferred.

Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of clinical nursing experience in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Minimum of two (2) years of progressive leadership experience, such as charge nurse, clinical lead, supervisor, or other nursing leadership role. Demonstrated experience in staff supervision, clinical operations, and quality improvement preferred.

Equipment/Technology: Demonstrated ability to use electronic health records, Microsoft Office applications, and other computer systems and technology required for clinical and administrative responsibilities. Ability to learn and effectively use organizational systems and technology as required.
