Job summary

Berkeley Lab is seeking a Hoffman Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow in Nuclear Nonproliferation to advance research across the DOE complex. The two-year program supports independent projects with potential post-fellowship staff opportunities at multiple national laboratories.

Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in a technical field and have less than three years of paid postdoctoral experience by Oct 1, 2027. U.S. citizenship and eligibility for a DOE Q clearance are required.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in a technical field (chemistry, physics, materials science, engineering, earth/atmospheric sciences, geophysics)
• Less than three years of paid postdoctoral experience as of Oct 1, 2027
• Strong publication and presentation record
• Ability to conduct independent research with sound judgment
• Willingness to pursue post-fellowship staff opportunities across multiple labs and locations

Responsibilities

• Define project scope, objectives, and research strategies for an independent project in nuclear nonproliferation
• Manage budget, schedule, and milestones and adapt plans as needed
• Execute technical work—experimental, field-based, or computational—collaborating across disciplines
• Ensure high-quality data through sound instrumentation and analysis practices
• Communicate results via publications, reports, and sponsor engagements
• Build networks across Berkeley Lab and DOE national labs, including future staff opportunities
• Promote a safe, inclusive, high-performing research environment
• Participate in NextGen leadership and career development activities
• Engage in seminars and group meetings to broaden perspectives and growth
• Explore DOE labs across the system during the second fellowship year
