ORAU is offering a MEMS research internship at the U.S. Army DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi, MD. The internship focuses on developing advanced MEMS technologies used in Assured Positioning and Radio Frequency systems. Candidates should be pursuing an Electrical, Mechanical, or Materials Science degree and have strong lab experience.

Description

This opportunity is available at the U.S. Army DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory located at Adelphi, MD. The Advanced Photonics, Electronics & Quantum Sciences (APEQS) seeks candidates interested in future electronics technologies who have recently studied or are currently studying engineering or scientific disciplines. The research aims to advance next‑generation Assured Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) and Radio Frequency (RF) systems through the research, development, and analysis of specialized Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) technologies. The effort focuses on developing cutting‑edge MEMS gyroscopes, accelerometers, novel supporting electronics, advanced MEMS RF resonators, filters, tunable components, and ultra‑sensitive sensors to establish critical building blocks for compact, power‑efficient, high‑performance electronic systems.

Responsibilities
  • Design, fabricate, and characterize MEMS gyroscopes, accelerometers, and RF resonators.
  • Conduct research, development, and analysis of MEMS technologies for PNT and RF systems.
  • Develop simulation models and perform 3D CAD, FEA simulations, and data analysis.
  • Maintain rigorous lab documentation and produce technical reports.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across materials, modeling, fabrication, and electronics.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for this MEMS research internship should be an undergraduate pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or Applied Physics, supported by foundational coursework in calculus, university physics, circuit theory, and mechanics. Applicants who have completed advanced coursework in microelectronics or device physics and possess technical proficiency in 3D CAD modeling, FEA simulation (e.g., COMSOL or ANSYS), and data analysis using Python or MATLAB will be highly favored. Prior hands‑on experience with standard electrical characterization equipment, exposure to cleanroom microfabrication processes or materials metrology (such as SEM or AFM), and a strong capability for rigorous laboratory documentation and technical communication are also desirable.
