Job summary

The New York Times is seeking an Operations Manager to join Newsroom Operations. You will provide hands-on support and oversight of logistics for multiple departments, guiding tasks to completion and supporting masthead and journalists with a range of daily responsibilities and projects.

This role is hybrid with four in-office days per week, possibly five during peak cycles. You will coordinate on-site events, manage budgets with Finance, oversee equipment setups, and streamline Workday

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in an operational or administrative role.
• Ability to drive projects forward.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience dealing with detailed and confidential and private concerns.
• You can work and keep an optimistic attitude while maintaining a keen sense of urgency.
• Be accessible after hours or on weekends when circumstances require.
• Impeccable organizational and time management skills; ability to multitask, prioritize and work under deadline pressure.
• Ability to work with all levels of management and staff and manage the needs of a team of 100+ employees and leaders.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary, accountable operational contact for members of the masthead, department heads, and journalists, resolving operational roadblocks independently.
• Responsible for on-site setup of various in-office events including mock elections, team all hands gatherings, team lunches and similar events, and serving as a production coordinator for all such events including live coverage setups, catering logistics, seating, and equipment deployment during breaking news cycles.
• Oversee complex equipment setups for assigned desks, ensuring hardware and configurations are functional for journalists.
• Work with the Newsroom Finance team to help create annual budgets and provide oversight of those budgets, including monthly closes and reports.
• Manage work and vacation schedules and maintain time banks in Workday; coordinate with Payroll for transfers and payouts.
• Manage travel calendar and ensure proper setup for assignments and travel insurance.
• Approve expenses and travel costs in Workday.
• Manage freelancers and vendors’ payments, per Contracts Manager.
• Oversee accounts payable and receivable for assigned departments.

Education

Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent
