Job summary

The New York Times is seeking a News Assistant to support our data journalism teams, focusing on elections and weather data. This in-office role requires collaboration with reporters and editors and a minimum four days per week in New York City.

You will verify figures, gather data from county officials, manage audience-related tasks, and assist in project documentation while contributing to our mission of independent, high-quality journalism.

Qualifications

• 1+ years experience with Google Workspace, including Google Sheets.
• 1+ years experience in a role requiring research, data journalism or fact checking.
• Experience in a fast-paced environment.
• Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem solving skills; attention to detail.
• Attention to detail, organization and self-directedness.
• Comfort talking to people on the phone.

Responsibilities

• Fact-checking and verifying figures in stories, charts and polling releases.
• Gathering information and calling county officials to verify data on election night.
• Help manage audience accounts, including generating, proofreading and fact-checking audience-related tasks.
• Assisting in project management by keeping documentation and project boards up-to-date.
• Monitor audience metrics for the weather team.
• Tackle new responsibilities as the need arises.
