The New York Times is seeking a News Assistant to support data journalism teams with a focus on elections and weather data. This in-office role is based in New York City and requires regular attendance in the office four days a week.

You will assist with data entry, fact-checking figures, verify information with county officials, and support audience management and project boards. Collaboration with reporters and editors is essential.

Qualifications

• 1+ years experience with Google Workspace, including Google Sheets.
• 1+ years experience in a role requiring research, data journalism or fact checking.
• Experience in a fast-paced environment.
• Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem solving skills; attention to detail.
• Attention to detail, organization and self-directedness.
• Comfort talking to people on the phone.

Responsibilities

• Assist with data entry for poll collection pages.
• Fact-checking and verifying figures in stories, charts and polling releases.
• Gathering information and calling county officials to verify data for election night.
• Help manage audience accounts, generate, proofread and fact-check audience-related tasks.
• Assisting in project management by keeping documentation and project boards up-to-date.
• Monitor audience metrics for the weather team and support reporting.
• Demonstrate support for journalistic independence and our mission to seek the truth.
