Job Summary
- Under the direction and oversight of licensed RN supervision, provides direct and indirect patient care.
- Demonstrates clinical competence when providing care, using technology, administering medications, performing procedures, and managing emergencies, with supervision oversight.
- Acts as a patient and family advocate.
- Provides assessment and planning for individualized patient care.
- Determines priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the system.
- Communicates appropriately regarding changes in patient's status, symptomatology, and results of diagnostic studies.
- Able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment.
Essential Functions
- If state requirements allow, may sign off on paperwork using the initials 'GN' to signify a graduate nurse.
- For states prohibiting new graduate nurses from signing off, RN licensed supervising care must sign off on applicable paperwork.
- Maintains accurate and ongoing documentation including patient histories, conditions, treatments, responses, and assessments of changes.
- Able to perform head-to-toe assessments on general patient populations, including pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, as per policy.
- Able to assess and reassess pain and utilize appropriate pain management techniques.
- Educates patients and families regarding pain management.
- Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on patient age and clinical condition.
- Follows the six medication rights to reduce potential errors.
- Formulates and revises individualized care plans based on patient responses, evaluating their effectiveness daily.
- Interacts professionally with patients and families, involving them in care planning.
- Treats patients and families with respect and dignity, addressing psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and spiritual needs.
- Assists physicians with procedures as needed.
- Functions as a liaison between administration, patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
- Communicates effectively with all parties, focusing on customer service and positive language principles.
- Knowledge of growth and development principles to provide age-appropriate care.
- Interprets patient data to identify age-specific needs and provide appropriate care.
Qualifications
Education
- Associate Degree in Nursing required.
Licenses/Certifications
- Scheduled to complete and pass the NCLEX within 90 days of graduation from RN program. Temporary Nursing Practice Permit as required by state.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) within 90 days of hire or transfer.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within 90 days of hire or transfer.
Experience
- Patient care experience preferred.
Required Skills
- Ability to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
- Basic computer skills.
- Proficient time management skills.
- Uses critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously as per Nurse Practice Act.
- Proficiency in English; additional languages preferred.
- Ability to function independently and exercise judgment in interactions with healthcare team and patients.
