Job summary

The New York State Psychiatric Institute is seeking a Research Scientist I to perform advanced neuroscience research in a mouse-based systems neuroscience lab examining how early-life adversity affects reward processing and ventral pallidal-accumbal circuits.

Responsibilities include designing longitudinal behavioral experiments, performing surgeries, maintaining colonies, conducting in vivo experiments, and generating analyses in Python/R/MATLAB.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with 2 years of professional research experience, or a master's degree in an appropriate field.
  • Doctoral training or PhD may be preferred for advanced roles.

Responsibilities

  • Design and run longitudinal behavioral experiments, including developmental stress paradigms and reward-sensitivity assays.
  • Perform stereotaxic surgery, viral vector delivery, and implantation of optical fibers and recording devices.
  • Breed and maintain transgenic mouse colonies, including genotyping and records.
  • Conduct in vivo optogenetic, fiber photometry and electrophysiological experiments in awake behaving mice.
  • Perform histology, immunohistochemistry, whole-brain activity mapping, microscopy and atlas registration.
  • Build analysis pipelines for behavioral, imaging and electrophysiological data in Python, R or MATLAB.
  • Prepare figures and text for manuscripts, grants and progress reports; present at lab meetings and conferences.
  • Supervise and train research technicians, undergraduate students and PhD students; maintain compliance and records.
  • Maintain IACUC and safety compliance; occasional evening or weekend work for animal care.
