Job summary

University of Chicago Medicine in the Chicago area is seeking a Neurodiagnostic Specialist I in the Pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring unit. This 100% onsite role requires base in the greater Chicagoland area and focuses on AV/EEG monitoring, NCV/EMG assistance, and intracranial procedures.

The successful candidate will perform advanced data handling, intraoperative monitoring, and contribute to electrode mapping and DBS/Wada studies, while training junior staff and supporting center protocols.

Qualifications

  • Must complete the ASET online course LTM 100 titled Introduction to LTM for EMU Personnel.
  • CPR/BLS certification through the American Heart Association.
  • EEG. T. or equivalent with four years performing standard and complex neurodiagnostic procedures.
  • Must be able to perform two of the four modalities (ICU EEG, NCV, Intracranial and ECoG).
  • Must possess ABRET-acceptable competency skills for national board certification.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for routine, complex and long-term AV/EEG monitoring or NCVs and assist with EMGs.
  • Clip, prune, archive and purge EEG data after final report is signed by the attending.
  • Perform intraoperative electrocorticography, cortical stimulation, DBS recordings and Wada studies with minimal assistance.
  • Support subdural/stereo-EEG monitoring, electrode connections, montage creation and stimulation troubleshooting.
  • Maintain monitoring equipment and report malfunctions to supervisor.
  • Train and assist junior technologists as necessary.
  • Attend clinical conferences to maintain credentials and update skills.
  • Contribute to development and revision of center policies and procedures.

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, University of Chicago Medical Center, as a Neurodiagnostic Specialist I, in our Pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring department. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

The Neurodiagnostic Specialist I works independently and proficiently in the preparation of patients for both routine, complex and long term AV/EEG monitoring or performing NCV’s and assisting with EMG’s. Performs data management by clipping, pruning, archiving and purging of EEG data after final report is signed by the attending. The Neurodiagnostic Specialist I also performs at least two of the four specialty procedures/testing including, intracranial EEG set-up and recording from implanted electrodes, assisting the physician with stimulation via intracranial electrodes, ECOG, and DBS recordings in the operating room, and recording in the radiology suite during a WADA test.

Essential Job Functions
  • Identifies abnormalities (e.g., ictal, inter-ictal, paroxysmal activity and non-epileptic behavioral events. and clips, prunes, and archives these as separate files in accordance with institutional SOP.
  • Immediately alerts appropriate medical staff (per institutional SOP) of any EEG studies requiring urgent attention and/or any additional support for interpretation including but not limited to seizures and other critical events captured on video.
  • Able to perform intraoperative electrocorticography, cortical stimulation, DBS recordings, and intra-carotid sodium amobarbital (Wada) studies with minimal assistance.
  • Participates in all aspects of subdural/stereo-EEG monitoring, including electrode connections, montage creation/verification, troubleshooting stimulation for cortical mapping, and disconnection.
  • Maintains monitoring equipment in excellent operating condition, detects instrument and computer malfunctions, corrects the problems whenever possible and notifies the supervisor.
  • Trains and assists junior technologists as necessary.
  • Attends clinical conferences in support of maintaining credentials and certifications along with updating knowledge base and skillset.
  • Participates in the development and revision of center policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
  • Successful completion of the ASET online course, LTM 100, titled Introduction to LTM for EMU Personnel.
  • CPR certified in basic cardiac life support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • EEG. T. or equivalent, plus four (4) years performing standard and complex neurodiagnostic procedures required.
  • Must be able to perform two of the four modalities (ICU EEG, NCV, Intracranial and ECoG).
  • Must possess ASET competency skills and knowledge required by the American Board of Registration of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) for national board certification.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree preferred or graduate of an Electro neurodiagnostic Technology program preferred.
