Job summary

Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC is seeking a Health Unit Coordinator for the Neuro ICU. The role provides essential clerical support within the patient care unit, serving as a central communications resource for patients, visitors, physicians, and staff.

The HUC will manage patient records in the EMR, schedule appointments, coordinate transportation, and support unit operations and onboarding. The shift is day hours with 7:00am–7:30pm coverage; three 12-hour shifts per week.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum six months of customer service experience.
• Knowledge of EMR systems and medical terminology.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a primary point of contact for patients, visitors, and staff, providing courteous and professional customer service.
• Answer and direct telephone calls, relay messages, and respond to patient requests appropriately.
• Manage patient records by maintaining charts, preparing documents, and uploading information into the EMR.
• Navigate EMR systems to access patient information, generate reports, schedule appointments, and manage task lists.
• Coordinate patient transportation requests using available technology.
• Assist with unit operations, including ordering supplies, maintaining inventory, copying, filing, mailing, and distributing materials.
• Maintain departmental records such as timekeeping information, compliance reports, and continuing education documentation.
• Support onboarding activities by assisting with clerical training for new staff members.
• Schedule maintenance requests and generate reports as directed by leadership.
• Participate in process improvement initiatives and ensure compliance with regulatory and legal requirements.
• Conduct patient rounds to introduce services and address questions or concerns.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
