Job summary

Mindspan Institute in Cambridge, MA is seeking an engineering‑oriented scientist‑engineer to advance cellular activity imaging at subcellular resolution. You will design and optimize experiments, recording neuronal signals while reasoning about which parameters matter and why.

The role emphasizes meticulous execution and documentation to improve throughput. You will collaborate across teams to boost performance, build robust protocols, and share insights as you develop new imaging pipelines.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in bioengineering, neuroscience, biophysics, chemistry, biochemistry, materials science, or related field.
• Demonstrated expertise with neuronal activity recordings (electrophysiology, calcium imaging, voltage imaging).
• Hands-on experience with neural tissue handling, cell culture, histology, and fluorescent microscopy.
• Experience interpreting neuronal dynamics from imaging data.
• Strong data analysis skills (Python, C++, MATLAB, ImageJ, or similar).
• Ability to build, modify, troubleshoot, and improve complex experimental systems.
• Excellent experimental judgment and scientific rigor.

Responsibilities

• Design, execute, and optimize cellular activity imaging experiments.
• Lead efforts to produce high-quality voltage imaging and synaptic recording data from iPSC-derived neurons and brain slices.
• Characterize optogenetics and voltage sensor performance.
• Evaluate gene expression systems.
• Analyze physiology data in collaboration with the Computation and Analysis team.
• Documentation and training: keep protocol records that others can execute, with the reasoning behind each parameter.
