Job summary

Kentucky State Police in Harlan, KY is seeking a Network Technician III to support the South Communications Region. The role covers maintaining radio networks, remote sites, and associated consoles, plus management of mobile radios, radar systems, routers, and related networks.

You will work Monday through Friday with 24/7 on-call, participate in project management for complex deployments, and document system configurations.

Qualifications

  • Four years of network services, IT systems support, or related field.
  • Five years of experience maintaining communications systems.
  • Education may substitute for experience and vice versa under state policy.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze complex terrestrial, wireless, and 124-site networks including routers, switches, consoles, and end-user hardware.
  • Install, modify, repair, and maintain peripheral devices and interfaces with KSP networks.
  • Oversee procurement, inventory, and customer needs assessment.
  • Conduct training sessions on equipment maintenance, radio and radar operations.
  • Design, plan, implement, operate, and support VOIP, 911 PBX, and other networks.
  • Provide project management for complex network projects and migrations.
  • Maintain documentation of network configurations.
  • Prepare reports and time sheets and other operational records.
  • Review and maintain operational records for statewide technicians.

This Network Technician III position will support the Kentucky State Police South Communications Region whichincludes Posts 7, 10, 11, and 15. The technician will be part of a small team that will be required tomaintain the radio network, remote radio sites, and the associated radio consoles within the South Region.Additionally, the technician will be required to maintain all mobile radios, radar systems, data routers,sirens, and lights. The technician will be required to work Monday through Friday and will be on-call 24/7.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Performs analysis of a complex terrestrial, omnidirectional, wireless, 124 site communications networkincluding design, planning, implementation, operation service, and support of digital transceivers, routers,switches, consoles, PCs, modems, and end user hardware.
  • Installation, modification, repair, and maintenance of peripheral end-user devices and interfaces with KSPnetworks and systems.
  • Oversees procurement, inventory, and customer needs assessment.
  • Conducts training sessionson equipment maintenance procedures, radio and radar operations and other sub-system programs.
  • Responsible for design, planning, implementation, operation service, and support for other KSP criticalnetworks and systems including (not limited to) VoiceOver IP telephony 911 PBX, computerized detection systems,multiplexed point-to-point, video, and satellite and terrestrial mesh networks.
  • Provides Project Management for complex network projects in the form of initiating, planning, executing,controlling, and closing the work of a team of in-house staff, communications utility providers, and varioustechnology vendors to achieve specific goals and meet criteria of network system transitions and migrations.
  • Maintains documentation of network configuration.
  • Evaluates and recommends forms and record design, testprocedures, problem reports from customers, etc.
  • Reviews, prepares, and maintains operational records andreports including daily activity reports, time sheets, equipment inventory, system status reports and othertechnical and administrative reports for technicians' use statewide.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Five years of experience maintaining communications systems
  • Ability to work as a team and independently
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: High school graduate.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Four years of network services, Information Technology (IT) systems support, IT production support, or a related field.

Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Additional education in computer science, IT, or a related field will substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Additional experience in network services, IT systems support, IT production support, or a related field will substitute for required education on a year-for-year basis OR a certification in an IT related field will substitute for the required education.

Working Conditions: Incumbents working in this job title typically perform their work in an office setting.

Probationary Period: This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
