Our client, a non-profit technology and networking organization, is seeking a Network Operations Engineer to join their team in La Mirada, CA!
Responsibilities
- Proactively monitor network infrastructure to identify, triage, and resolve issues before they become service-affecting.
- Review monitoring alerts, turnover reports, scheduled maintenance, and overall network conditions.
- Participate in a rotating triage schedule to investigate alarms, respond to incoming calls, and address new service requests.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for customers, vendors, and carriers experiencing network issues.
- Provide initial diagnosis and troubleshooting for network incidents, outages, and service interruptions.
- Manage incident tickets from initial intake through resolution and provide timely status updates.
- Communicate outage notifications, network status updates, and maintenance information to affected stakeholders.
- Troubleshoot routing, circuit, connectivity, and network performance issues on live production infrastructure.
- Execute approved network changes, including configuration changes, firmware updates, and hardware maintenance.
- Support network equipment upgrades, replacements, and scheduled maintenance activities.
- Plan and coordinate maintenance activities, including impact analysis and preparation of Methods of Procedure (MOPs).
- Follow established change-management, incident-management, and escalation procedures.
- Coordinate with vendors, carriers, and third-party service providers to troubleshoot and resolve network issues.
- Coordinate remote-hands activities and equipment shipments for remote network sites.
- Maintain accurate records and inventory of network equipment.
- Escalate complex, ambiguous, or unresolved incidents to senior network operations or engineering personnel.
- Maintain accurate incident records, operational documentation, procedures, and network information.
- Participate in updating policies, procedures, and technical documentation.
- Identify opportunities to improve network operations processes, tools, and workflows.
- Collaborate with Network Engineering, Security, and other technical teams to improve network reliability and performance.
Required Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in network operations, technical support, network engineering, or a similar environment.
- Experience supporting customers, users, vendors, or other stakeholders through phone and ticketing systems.
- Hands-on experience with Cisco, Juniper, or similar production network equipment.
- Experience with network configuration, firmware updates, equipment maintenance, or related operational activities.
- Experience troubleshooting Layer 3 routing and network performance issues.
- Understanding of routing protocols and network troubleshooting methodologies.
- Experience troubleshooting circuit connectivity, including commercially lit services and/or dark fiber.
- Understanding of network security fundamentals, including ACLs, firewalls, secure device configuration, and intrusion detection.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple incidents and requests in a fast-paced operational environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- CCNA, JNCIA, or equivalent networking certification.
- Experience operating and managing networks in a service provider, telecommunications, ISP, or large-scale network environment.
- Experience with optical transmission technologies, including DWDM.
- Working knowledge of BGP, MPLS, and L2VPN technologies.
- Familiarity with network monitoring and ticketing platforms such as Zabbix and Jira.
- Experience supporting research, education, higher education, or other mission-critical network environments.
This is a 24/7/365 Network Operations Center environment. The regular schedule consists of four 10-hour shifts per week, with the four workdays potentially falling on any day of the week based on operational requirements. Candidates must be willing to workdays, evenings, overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays as assigned.
This position has an unusual hybrid schedule where the first two weeks of the month are onsite and the rest of the month is remote.
