Our client, a non-profit technology and networking organization, is seeking a Senior Network Engineer to join their team in La Mirada, CA!
The ideal candidate will play a strategic and highly technical role in the design, implementation, evolution, and long-term planning of a sophisticated, high-performance network infrastructure.
Responsibilities
Network Planning & Design
- Lead the design and evolution of optical and Layer 2/Layer 3 backbone and access networks under the direction of the Principal Engineer.
- Develop and maintain strategic and tactical engineering goals, project plans, and network roadmaps.
- Establish and maintain architectural standards, design templates, configuration policies, and engineering best practices.
- Conduct traffic analysis, capacity planning, and network performance assessments to guide long-term infrastructure decisions.
- Evaluate emerging networking technologies and industry trends.
- Participate in industry conferences and technical events as needed.
Technical Leadership
- Serve as a senior technical authority and architectural decision-maker for backbone and member-facing networks and services.
- Translate organizational objectives into technical roadmaps supporting long-term infrastructure and service strategies.
- Represent the organization in technical partnerships, industry initiatives, alliances, and external engagements.
- Identify systemic technical challenges, risks, and opportunities and drive coordinated solutions across teams.
- Partner closely with Network Operations, Security, Program Management, and other technical teams on network design, deployment, optimization, and complex troubleshooting.
- Act as a technical resource and mentor to network engineers across the organization.
- Provide guidance on complex network architecture, engineering, and troubleshooting issues.
- Participate in technical design reviews, peer reviews, training, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
- Promote consistent engineering practices, documentation, and operational standards.
Automation & Network Tooling
- Identify opportunities to automate network provisioning, configuration, monitoring, testing, and operational workflows.
- Help evaluate, select, and improve network visibility, monitoring, and performance-management tools.
- Support the development and adoption of automation practices that improve network reliability and operational efficiency.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline with 10+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
- Advanced expertise in IP networking, including BGP, OSPF, and/or IS-IS.
- Strong knowledge of MPLS and Segment Routing.
- Extensive experience with VPN technologies, including L2VPN and IPVPN.
- Strong understanding of network traffic engineering, capacity planning, and backbone network architecture.
- Experience configuring, operating, and evaluating networking equipment from major vendors such as Cisco, Juniper, Arista, and/or Nokia.
- Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership through mentoring, peer reviews, architectural guidance, and adoption of engineering best practices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate with engineers, senior leadership, external partners, and technical stakeholders.
- Ability to work a flexible 4x10 schedule, including days, evenings, weekends, or holidays when required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with DWDM/optical networking, particularly Cisco NCS 2006 and/or NCS 1010 platforms.
- Experience with network automation for configuration, monitoring, testing, and provisioning.
- Proficiency or working knowledge of Python, Cisco NSO, NetBox, or similar network automation and management platforms.
- Experience designing and implementing IP peering with cloud providers, content providers, telecommunications carriers, Internet service providers, or other network operators.
- Experience working with large-scale research, education, Internet backbone, service provider, or high-availability network environments.
- Familiarity with emerging networking technologies and architectures.
The Position Follows a Unique Hybrid Schedule
- First two weeks of each month: Onsite.
- Last two weeks of each month: Remote.
- Four 10-hour shifts per week.
- Employees must be flexible to work any four days of the week, including all three shifts, weekends, and holidays when required by business or network operations.
