The Network Engineering Team Lead is responsible for the operational leadership and coordination of the university's network infrastructure and telephony communication services. This role is responsible for supervising and managing the Network Engineers within the Network Services department, providing oversight of wireless and wired networking, Internet and Internet2 connectivity, VPNs, Cisco firewalls, and Cisco Unified Communications Manager, and other related systems. The manager ensures the delivery of reliable, secure, and scalable network services that support academic, research, and administrative functions across campus.
Key responsibilities include supervisory leadership of the Network Engineering team, leading departmental projects with university-wide impact, and assigning and overseeing staff tasks to ensure their effective completion; planning and implementation of the University connectivity to high-speed regional networks and maintaining connectivity to the Internet and the national phone network; identifying new departmental initiatives and collaborating with the CTO to allocate resources appropriately; and overseeing major projects and timelines focused on planning, facilities design, installation and equipment upgrades.
As part of the Chief Technology Officer's (CTO) leadership team, the Network Engineering Team Lead contributes to seamless operations across IT Infrastructure teams, including Collaboration Services, Endpoint Management, Infrastructure, Network Services, and Research Computing. The Manager works collaboratively to advance critical projects and coordinate cross-team efforts, especially where initiatives require multidisciplinary expertise. They engage with internal customers to resolve issues and explore network solutions, and partner with external service providers to identify, contract for, and implement services and to resolve contractual performance issues.
While this position is a supervisory role, it is also a senior technical role with approximately 70% of their time focused on technical aspects of the services for which they are responsible. The manager will serve as a mentor to staff and advocate for staff development and training.
