Project Overview
The Telephony Engineer / Project Lead will provideadvanced operational, engineering, administration, and project leadershipsupport for the University of South Carolina’s enterprise telephony and unifiedcommunications environment. The role is responsible for maintaining reliablevoice services, supporting day-to-day telephony operations, resolving complexincidents, leading technical initiatives, and improving the performance,resiliency, and efficiency of enterprise voice systems.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Provideoperational and advanced telephony administration, including move, add,change, and disconnect requests for voice, voicemail, conference services,safety devices, telephone IVR, vectoring, call center, and unifiedcommunication services.
- Maintainaccurate 911 location information and provide professional customerservice and support.
- Createand maintain detailed technical documentation, technical notes, andknowledge base articles for internal and customer use.
- UseDivision of Information Technology systems to track work performed andlabor hours.
- Provideadvanced technical support for projects and lead tasks required tomaintain enterprise telephony network systems.
- Research,design, maintain, and implement improvements to the enterprise telephonynetwork.
- Configureand install telephony systems, hardware, media gateways, telephones, andsafety devices.
- Developand document technical standards, processes, and system configurations,and perform quality assurance testing.
- Workwith vendors to provision new circuits and resolve outages.
- Analyzeand evaluate vector routing, ARS routing tables, and route patterns, anddiagnose and resolve related issues.
- Surveyexisting telephone systems and recommend appropriate technologies toaddress specific requirements.
- Providetechnical recommendations for the strategic direction of enterprisetelephony services and serve as the primary escalation point for technicalwork.
- Provideoperational and engineer-level support for enterprise telephony networksand unified communications and resolve customer incident tickets.
- Coordinatemulti-team efforts to resolve outages and perform advanced maintenance andrepair of telephony and unified communications systems.
- Identifyopportunities for automation and work with the Division of InformationTechnology Automation team to streamline operational processes.
- Collaboratewith team members, other groups, and vendors to improve service quality,efficiency, resiliency, and reduce outage time.
- Monitortelephony and network systems to proactively identify and resolve problemsand ensure maximum uptime.
- Maintainaccurate system documentation and system diagrams as enhancements andchanges are implemented.
- FollowDivision of Information Technology Incident Management and ChangeManagement processes.
Requirements
Education and Certifications:
- Bachelor’sdegree or equivalent work experience.
Required Skills:
- 2+ yearsof experience with Avaya on-premises PBX systems.
- 2+ yearsof experience administering VoIP and Unified Communications platforms.
- 2+ yearsof experience with SIP, RTP, QoS, dial plans, call routing, and voicegateway technologies.
- 2+ yearsof experience troubleshooting voice quality, call routing, carrierconnectivity, and E911 services.
- 2+ yearsof experience with telecommunications infrastructure, including voicecircuits, Session Border Controllers (SBCs), and PSTN integration.
Preferred Skills:
- Experiencedesigning, implementing, and supporting enterprise cloud-based telephonysolutions, including migration from on-premises telephony platforms tocloud-based services.
Additional Skills:
- Moderatelycomplex to complex knowledge of telephone network services and telephonenetwork design methods.
- Abilityto present technical and non-technical reports clearly and concisely.
- Abilityto establish effective working relationships with vendors, managementstaff, and users.
- Advancedknowledge of systems administration techniques and tools.
- Stronginterpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to managemultiple, shifting priorities.
