Job Summary

The Optical Network Engineer plays a vital role within IPNT, bringing high technical expertise in engineering and supporting the Optical Transport Network that underpins all Optimum offerings. This position is crucial as it serves as a technical resource, providing future plans, information, and support across all responsibilities within Transport Network. The engineer will follow the guidance of the Network Transport Manager and collaborate with the Director. Responsibilities include assisting with transport installations, circuit creation, system documentation, upgrades, and maintaining network hardware and operating systems. They will respond to issues, diagnose problems, and document solutions, using various network and server tools. The Optical Network Engineer is an expert in their responsibilities and contributes to the overall network transport infrastructure.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Network Transport Director and other engineers in planning, designing, and supporting reliable optical solutions.
  • Perform complex tasks related to installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of transport equipment (SONET, digital, DWDM, analog, telephony), including fiber equipment, MUX/DEMUX, and status monitoring equipment.
  • Possess high-level knowledge of CWDM and DWDM hardware (Infinera, Nokia, Cisco systems) and support business unit requirements.
  • Understand Ethernet interfaces, protocols, and support network devices.
  • Manage and maintain network protocols and configurations; develop documentation and training materials.
  • Collaborate with Corporate Engineering to develop testing criteria for new technologies.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues related to internet delivery, VoIP, and other services.
  • Monitor network performance and support internal departments.
  • Work with other engineering teams on network transport issues.
  • Enhance troubleshooting methods and tools for the transport network.
  • Maintain logs, diagrams, and reports of network systems.
  • Participate in high-level escalation and support digital services issues.
  • Contribute to special projects as directed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years of experience with hardware platforms and OS (Infinera, Cisco, Nokia).
  • Knowledge of network management software (DNA, NMF-T, Cisco Prime).
  • Experience with test tools and optical spectrum analyzers.
  • Strong understanding of transport hardware/software and networking technologies.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting and technical writing.
  • Ability to work under pressure and in teams.
  • Knowledge of Windows OS.

The starting salary in New Jersey ranges from $69,615 to $114,368 annually. For other locations, please inquire with your recruiter. Salaries are indicative and may vary based on skills and experience.
