Job summary

Bluebird Fiber is a premier fiber telecommunications provider in the Midwest, serving carriers, businesses, schools, hospitals and other enterprises. This role focuses on fiber design engineering, outside plant activities, and coordinating splicing and connectivity projects.

The position requires hands-on experience with mapping and fiber management systems (ArcGIS, 3-GIS, OSP Insight, CircuitVision), OTDR testing, and strong project coordination.

Qualifications

  • 1+ years fusion splicing experience.
  • Experience with fiber management software such as Arc GIS, OSP Insight, 3-GIS or CircuitVision.
  • Degree in GIS or FOT certification.
  • 2+ years installing, troubleshooting, and designing fiber optic and Ethernet transport in a service provider environment.

Responsibilities

  • Single point of contact for all splicing design and troubleshooting.
  • Develop SOW and MOP documentation for activating new customers and maintenance events.
  • Coordinate splicing contractors and ensure timely delivery of as‑spliced documentation.
  • Oversee fiber optic testing and QA using OTDR, Power Meter, and related test sets.
  • Maintain project records and status updates.

Position Purpose

The Fiber Design Engineer position is for a highly experienced engineer with experience in outside plant activities such as splicing and fiber connectivity design. The position requires the engineer to utilize mapping and fiber management systems like 3‑GIS, Arc GIS, OSP Insight, or CircuitVision. Being able to thrive in a fast‑paced environment encompassing construction and trouble management responsibilities for all aspects of physical fiber optic plant is vital for this position.

Requirements
  • 1+ years of fusion splicing experience
  • Previous experience with fiber management software such as Arc GIS, OSP Insight, 3‑GIS, or CircuitVision
  • Degree in GIS or FOT certification
Skills and Abilities
  • 2+ years installing, troubleshooting, and designing fiber optic and Ethernet physical transport in a service provider environment
  • 1+ years testing, QCing, and delivering high‑speed telecom services using test units such as OTDR, Fusion Splicer, Power Meter, and other fiber optic test sets
  • 1+ years directly managing inside and outside plant construction projects, capital budgets, and contractors
  • Proficiency using mapping and fiber management software (Arc GIS, 3‑GIS, QGIS, Google Earth, CircuitVision)
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Word & Excel, Visio and CAD software
  • Availability to perform on‑call work as prescribed, including after-hours (nights and weekends) call outs
  • Self‑motivated and the ability to make independent decisions based on policies, practices & project requirements
Primary Responsibilities
  • Single point of contact for all splicing design and troubleshooting
  • Develop accurate scope of work (SOW) documentation for activating new customers
  • Develop accurate method of procedure (MOP) documentation on any fiber related maintenance events
  • Coordinate splicing contractors, including check‑in and check‑out documentation and ensuring timely delivery of as‑spliced documentation
  • Perform oversight on fiber optic testing in relation to accepting newly installed plant or trouble repairs, using OTDR, CD/PMD, ORL and Power Meter, and/or other similar test sets
  • Perform post‑construction quality assurance of splicing contractor work to ensure work meets standard telecommunication construction standards and meets the scope of work requirements
  • Complete and understand project milestones while monitoring status and providing regular updates
  • Maintain project records and files in appropriate systems
  • Other duties as assigned
