Job Title: Network EngineerDepartment: Information TechnologyEmployment Type: Exempt, 12 month (1.0 FTE), Full-Time Staff (M-F 8am - 5pm)Salary Range: $50,000 - $65,000Job Summary:The Network Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, managing, and supporting the wired and wireless network infrastructure that enables reliable, secure technology services and system recovery across Eastern Mennonite University’s campuses. This role ensures high availability, performance, and security of campus network resources in support of academic programs, administrative operations, and campus community needs. The Network Engineer works collaboratively with IT staff, faculty, staff, and external vendors, and contributes to EMU’s mission through excellent service, teamwork, and stewardship of technology systemsProduct Knowledge:Network InfrastructureSwitches: Juniper, CiscoFirewall: FortinetAPs: MerakiNetwork Management & MonitoringITSM: TeamDynamixIPAM/DCIM: NetboxMonitoring: LibreNMSDocumentation: VisioAutomation & ScriptingAutomation: AnsibleScripting Languages: Python, PowershellCLI: Linux CLICloud & CollaborationLogging: Azure Log AnalyticsPlatform: Google WorkspaceDuties/Responsibilities:Network Design, Deployment & MaintenanceDesign, configure and maintain the network infrastructure, including switches, routers, firewalls, wireless access points and cabling systems.Monitor network performance and capacity; make recommendations for upgrades or enhancements.Manage network segmentation, VLANs and routing protocols.Network Security & ComplianceImplement and maintain network security measures such as firewalls, intrusion prevention/detection systems, access controls and network security policy.Monitor network logs and alerts for anomalies, security threats and policy violations.Collaborate with IT staff on incident response, vulnerability management and network hardening.Support compliance with federal and institutional security standards (e.g. FERPA, GLBA and HIPPA where applicable).High Availability & System RecoveryDevelop and maintain network disaster recovery plans and procedures.Configure and manage load balancing, failover, and redundancy protocols across critical network infrastructure.Ensure network infrastructure is documented and configured for rapid system restoration.Required Skills/Abilities:Advanced knowledge of and experience with enterprise networking concepts, including:Core Routing & Switching: TCP/IP, OSPF/BGP routing, VLANs, and network segmentation.Wireless Infrastructure: Design, configuration, and maintenance of enterprise-grade wireless access points and controllers.Network Security: Implementing and maintaining firewalls, network access controls, and intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS).High Availability: Knowledge of system recovery, load balancing, and failover protocols to ensure high availability.Analytical & Strategic ThinkingCommunication & Interpersonal SkillsWork Management & AdaptabilityCommitment to Professional Growth: Proven ability to rapidly learn new technologies, adapt to evolving industry best practices, and pursue professional development and certifications.Ability to maintain confidential information and materials.Ability to occasionally work outside of standard business hours for maintenance and emergency response.Education and Experience:Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, or related field, and a minimum of 5 years of information technologyexperience in an enterprise environment. Experience in a higher education environment is preferred.Physical Requirements:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and use hands and fingers, to handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb or balance on a ladder. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
