Network Engineer

GDIT has an exciting opportunity to participate in the Security Assistance Group (SAG-U) as a member of our Enterprise Mission Information Technology Services (EMITS) program supporting U.S. Army Europe and Africa's (USAREUR-AF) mission in Wiesbaden, Germany.

The Network Engineer is the senior network engineering authority for the SAG-U mission portfolio. The position owns network design, integration planning, and capability introduction across every network and enclave the mission runs, from the baseline Department of Defense Information Network (DoDIN) footprint through the mission partner and coalition environments. The Network Engineer sets technical direction for other engineers, produces design documentation that carries capability through accreditation and delivery, and represents the program in technical exchanges with government, regional, and mission partner engineering organizations.

MEANINGFUL WORK AND PERSONAL IMPACT

• Serves as the senior technical authority for network engineering across the mission portfolio, setting design direction and technical standards, leading design reviews, and reviewing the work of other network engineers.
• Analyzes customer requirements and provides technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems.
• Creates plans and configures systems for data communication networks; designs and builds the hardware and software components of the mission networks and the organization's commercial network.
• Produces solution designs, integration plans, preliminary and critical design documentation, and network diagrams that support project milestones and accreditation activities.
• Plans and implements major changes to core routing and switching infrastructure, and major network modifications and expansions.
• Configures routers, switches, and firewalls for local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) systems, and VPN concentrators, with appropriate network engineering and communications protocols.
• Supports software‑defined wide area network (SD‑WAN) deployment, redundancy and failover design, and the integration of tactical data feeds into the enterprise transport layer.
• Performs maintenance and upgrade of networks including servers, routers, switches, firewalls, and remote access systems.
• Maintains network integrity and connectivity while ensuring compliance with policy, and maintains system backup and recovery capability.
• Monitors the network using industry leading technologies, and works closely with systems and security teams to define requirements, monitor network traffic, and respond to anomalies or security concerns.
• Leads partner integration planning and coalition architecture coordination across the Mission Partner Environment (MPE), and coordinates Mission Partner Network (MPN) engineering with the network owner.
• Evaluates new communications technologies to enhance the capability of the network, and develops and deploys multi‑tenant enabled solutions.
• Coordinates the acquisition of hardware and software as well as subcontractor services as needed, including developing designs and initial bills of material (IBOMs), and works closely with vendors to design and implement new systems.
• Provides the technical basis of estimate, work breakdown structure content, and risk input for network projects, and records engineering work and configuration changes in the government service management platform.
• Provides technical training, documentation, and technical assistance to Help Desk personnel. Assists other organizations and provides guidance to less‑experienced professionals.
• Represents the program in technical exchanges with local and regional Network Enterprise Centers, the Regional Cyber Center Europe (RCC‑E), and mission partner network engineers.
• Maintains current knowledge of relevant technology, and maintains, or acquires, the certifications necessary to meet evolving mission needs.
• May serve as a team or task lead.
• May require shift work or coverage during weekends and holidays.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO SUCCEED

• Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
• Required Experience: 8+ years of related network engineering experience.
• Required Technical Skills: Experience designing and implementing routed networks in multi‑enclave, multi‑vendor environments requiring high availability. Experience leading network design from requirement through implementation, including design documentation and technical review.
• Knowledge and experience with Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE) design, protocols, profiles, management, and functions.
• Knowledge and experience with Cisco Firepower Management Center (FMC).
• Knowledge and experience with Windows Server 2019.
• Security Clearance Level: Must possess and maintain a DoD Top Secret security clearance.
• Required Certifications: CCNA or equivalent industry certification. IAT Level II certification or higher to meet DoD 8570 requirements.
• Location: On customer site, Wiesbaden, Germany. Must be eligible for German TESA.
• Physical Requirements: This position may occasionally require some physical activity, including lifting objects, bending, crouching down to troubleshoot equipment, and long periods of sitting.
• Preferred Qualifications
• Current CCNP Routing and Switching, or CCNP Enterprise.
• Knowledge and experience with routing, switching, and encryption protocols, for example OSPF, EIGRP, BGP, Spanning Tree Protocol, ISAKMP, ESP, and MACsec.
• Experience engineering Commercial Solutions for Classified (CSfC) solutions.
• Experience with software‑defined wide area network platforms in an operational environment.
• Experience supporting coalition or mission partner network integration.
• Knowledge and experience with VMware.
• Experience developing network diagrams to support Requirements

German TESA requirements:

• A bachelors degree plus 3 years of recent specialized experience, OR; An associates degree plus 7 years of recent specialized experience, OR; A major certification plus 7 years of recent specialized experience, OR; 11 years of recent specialized experience.
