(NEPHROLOGIST) SCOPE OF PRACTICE
SPECIALTY SERVICES
SCOPE OF PRACTICE:
All providers granted privileges in VA Amarillo Health Care System are authorized to provide, deliver, and interpret professional services within the scope of their license across all care settings. The privileges requested (as marked below) reflect the areas in which the applicant meets applicable standards of education, training, Board Certification, and demonstrated proficiency.
CORE PRIVILEGES:
Nephrologists granted privileges are authorized to perform the following core functions:
- Examinations: Conduct thorough patient examinations, obtaining appropriate clinical, laboratory, and relevant data to determine patient care.
- Diagnosis: Interpret and evaluate clinical data to establish diagnoses and assess clinical status.
- Therapeutic Ability: Prescribe suitable treatments, apply therapeutic procedures, recognize and assess changes in patient behavior, symptoms, and signs, and modify treatment plans accordingly. Recognize personal capabilities and limitations.
- Effectiveness in Emergencies: Be readily available, quickly recognize emergency situations, and take timely actions.
- Patient Management: Develop rapport and maintain patient and family confidence through competence and interpersonal skills, ensuring patients are informed and involved in their treatment.
- Consultations and Specialty Skills: Recognize when consultation is needed and utilize facility or clinic specialty skills for diagnosis and treatment.
- Record Keeping: Promptly and accurately document examinations, patient status changes, and incidents. Maintain current and complete clinical records, including discharge summaries. Utilize the Computerized Patient Record System effectively. Complete and sign all progress notes and orders daily.
- Encounters: Complete all encounters daily, as this impacts hospital funding.
- Consults Closure: Ensure all consults are completed promptly after patient evaluation.
EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
Educational responsibilities involve teaching and/or coordination. Positions may include both roles or span multiple functions.
- Teaching and Monitoring: Serve as a mentor or teacher for residents, trainees, or staff, planning and guiding educational activities tailored to learners' needs. Counsel learners on professional goals, encourage active participation, solicit feedback, ensure content relevance and currency, develop educational materials, and employ appropriate learning resources.
- Coordination of Educational Programs: Assess educational needs through audits, surveys, morbidity/mortality data, and emerging health care developments. Establish procedures for self-assessment and needs evaluation, selecting cost-effective educational interventions. Set educational objectives aligned with needs and resources, and identify suitable learners.
- Complete all mandatory training annually.
