Job summary

Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC, is seeking a Patient Care Assistant to support NICU staff under RN supervision. You will perform basic nursing tasks, monitor patients, and help maintain a safe, clean, stocked care setting. Requires a high school diploma or GED, BLS, and CNA/EMT/CPCT certification.

Prior healthcare exposure preferred. The role emphasizes teamwork, communication, infection control, and compassionate family-centered care.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED is required.
• CNA/EMT/CPCT and BLS are required.
• Basic computer skills, aseptic technique, and math skills are required.

Responsibilities

• Patient Services – Admission: orient families to calls and monitor setup; take vital signs and measurements.
• Patient Services – Daily Living: assist with bathing, nutrition, tube feeding and care activities as directed.
• Direct Patient Care: assist RN with procedures, monitor for pain or skin issues, support room preparation and discharge readiness.
• Monitor Surveillance: observe monitors and alert RN to deviations; follow monitor guidelines and dress code.
• Infection Control: follow hand hygiene and clean equipment after patient use.
• Documentation: record vitals and care activities in nursing databases promptly.
• Communication/Professionalism: report changes to RN, maintain professional relationships and support family-centered care.
• Shared Leadership: participate in unit discussions and support leadership decisions.
• Safety: promote patient, family, and staff safety and verify information before actions.
