Job summary

Charles River is seeking a Technician I in Kentucky to train in onboarding tasks and collaborate in a team environment. You will learn basic animal handling, collection of samples, and lab prep under supervision to ensure study quality.

Qualifications

Job Overview

A Technician I is in training to perform and become proficient in on‑boarding tasks, procedures, and cooperating in a team environment. The technician is learning basic tasks required to conduct a study, which may include animal handling, euthanasia and sedation; animal procedures including dissection; collection of samples and weights; laboratory preparation, set up and cleaning; preparation of laboratory solutions. The technician is working under close supervision to gain proficiency.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure good welfare and humane care for all animals worked with through gentle, positive human‑animal interactions.
  • Train on onboarding tasks, including animal handling, euthanasia, sedation, dissection, collection of samples and weights, laboratory preparation, set up and cleaning, and preparation of laboratory solutions. Specific tasks will be based on each area’s training plan and business needs.
  • Collect, document, review, and verify data on forms or in electronic data capture systems.
  • Review documentation of functions performed as part of quality control requirements.
  • Use and maintain instrumentation and equipment.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

The pay for this position is $19.00/hr. Salaries vary based on experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or G.E.D. preferred. Associates or Bachelor’s degree in biological science or equivalent preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.
  • No specific certification required except as mandated by local government.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Knowledge of English.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite) and ability to learn validated systems.
  • Ability to ensure a safe working environment by observing all safety procedures, using protective clothing and equipment, and following all safety documents.
  • Ability to maintain the integrity of studies and fulfill regulatory requirements by performing activities according to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Business Operating Procedures (BOP), and IACUC rules.
  • Availability to work extended hours including evenings, weekends, and on short notice.
  • Ability to work under specific time constraints.
  • Authorized to work in the United States without a sponsor visa.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift, move, manipulate, and hold heavy objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Perform procedures that require talking, hearing, standing or sitting for long periods, data entry, use of instruments, reaching with hands and arms, working in narrow spaces, and wearing PPE.
  • Frequently hold species firmly while utilizing fine motor skills.
  • Meet vision requirements (close vision, color vision, depth perception, focus adjustment).
  • Work in an environment with sharp objects, mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, and noise levels ranging from moderate to loud.
  • Regularly work with live animals with risk of allergens, zoonotic disease, and biohazards.
Comments
  • This position requires overtime, weekend, holiday, and/or after‑hours shift coverage as needed.
