Job summary

Newport News Shipbuilding is seeking a skilled machinist for hydrostatic testing, drilling, and precision fabrication. You will install and align maritime machinery, read mechanical drawings, and verify tolerances with precision tools.

The role requires 3+ years of relevant experience, lifting up to 40 pounds, and the ability to work any shift in a multi-shift environment. Safety, quality, and teamwork are essential in our shipyard operations.

Qualifications

• Must have 3+ years of experience in assembly or outside machining/relevant experience.
• Ability to read, interpret, and work from mechanical drawings and fabrication prints.
• Proficient in using precision measuring equipment to verify dimensions and tolerances.
• Knowledge of safety and quality requirements to maintain a safe work area.

Responsibilities

• Perform hydrostatic testing of components and assemblies per engineering requirements and procedures.
• Operate magnetic base drills and other in-place machining equipment for drilling, reaming, line boring, and tapping.
• Install and align industrial maritime machinery using drawings and installation specs.
• Read and work from mechanical drawings and fabrication prints.
• Perform fabrication tasks including cutting, fitting, and grinding.
• Verify dimensions with precision measuring tools and report variances.
• Troubleshoot assembly issues and propose corrective actions.
• Assemble and disassemble mechanical components such as valves and gearboxes.
• Maintain a clean, safe workspace and adhere to safety and quality standards.
