Job summary

Elliott Bay Design Group LLC is seeking a Naval Architect to join our collaborative team and help develop innovative vessels and practical engineering solutions for clients across the United States. The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in naval architecture and a passion for solving complex design challenges.

Experience in marine mechanical, structural engineering, or related discipline is a plus.

Qualifications

  • ABET‑accredited B.S. in Naval Architecture or related field.
  • PE license preferred.
  • Minimum four years in maritime/naval architecture and marine engineering support.
  • Knowledge of marine construction, ship repair and regulatory frameworks.
  • Proficiency with Rhino, AutoCAD, MS Office; scripting in Python/Grasshopper.

Responsibilities

  • Develop/refine vessel arrangements, hull forms, structural designs and stability analyses.
  • Perform incline tests and deadweight surveys; prepare stability documentation.
  • Ensure designs comply with CFRs, IMO, ABS/DNV class rules, IEC, SOLAS.
  • Support design for new vessels and refurbishments; review contractor designs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate engineering systems.
  • Prepare specifications, schematics, reports, and progress updates.
  • Attend inspections and verify compliance with regulatory and safety standards.

Help shape the future of maritime design! Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG) is looking for a talented Naval Architect to join our collaborative team and help develop innovative vessels and practical engineering solutions for clients across the United States. The ideal candidate will have a degree in naval architecture and a passion for solving complex design challenges. Experience in marine mechanical, structural engineering, or another related discipline is a valuable plus.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Naval Architecture Design and Integration
  • Develop and/or refine vessel arrangements, hull forms, structural designs, stability analyses, and performance calculations in accordance with client requirements, regulatory standards, and industry best practices.
  • Perform incline tests and deadweight surveys and produce stability documentation for regulatory review.
  • Ensure all designs comply with applicable marine regulations and standards (e.g., CFRs, IMO requirements, ABS and DNV class rules, IEC, SOLAS).
  • Serve projects for both new vessel design and existing vessel refurbishment and modifications.
Systems Analysis and Troubleshooting
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including naval architects, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, structural engineers, marine designers, and project managers to ensure seamless integration of engineering systems.
  • Perform system design for common marine systems.
Project Execution and Oversight
  • Support project development, and collaborate with engineers, shipyards, vendors, clients, and regulatory agencies throughout the process.
  • Prepare project documentation including specifications, schematics, reports, and progress updates.
  • Review and provide comments on detailed designs submitted by shipyard contractors.
Compliance and Quality Assurance
  • Conduct vessel inspections and verifications to ensure compliance with regulatory, safety, and classification society requirements.
  • Prepare documentation for approval, certification, and audits.
Requirements
  • Minimum four years of experience within the maritime industry, providing naval architecture and marine engineering support.
  • Bachelor of Science degree from ABET accredited curriculum.
  • Professional Engineer's License (PE) preferred.
  • Must have strong knowledge of marine construction, ship repair, safety standards, and regulatory frameworks, with proven capability in shipyard and marine operations.
  • GHS, Rhino, AutoCAD, and MS Office Skills. Experience with scripting and automation (e.g. VBA, python, Grasshopper).
  • Ability to perform onsite ship inspections.

  • Conceptual understanding of systems, including fluid handling, mechanical propulsion components, hydraulics, and HVAC.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with solid reasoning.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to interpret data and develop design solutions.
  • Proficient in technical research, reporting, and clear written communication.
  • Effective team player who can also work independently.
  • Strong verbal communication skills and ability to present technical ideas clearly.
Physical and Mental Demands

Work is primarily performed in a remote office environment; however, the role requires flexibility to travel by car, plane, and vessel. Must be able to perform essential functions of vessel inspections, which may include climbing ladders, entering confined spaces, and conducting physical tasks in varied environment conditions. Salary Range

$48 - $75 per hour, depending on experience.
