This position is located in the Aquatics Division of the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department in the Southwest Region. The primary purpose of this position is to provide lifeguard protection to the beach and ocean-going public, ensuring all water safety rules are observed, performing rescue work and/or emergency first aid until advanced medical personnel arrive.
Knowledge Required for the Position:
- Possess certificate from the San Diego Regional Lifeguard Academy in Open Water Lifesaving, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and Emergency Response or recognized equivalents.
- Ability to pass a written test on lifeguard skills and swim 500 meters in the ocean in less than 10 minutes.
- Must be in excellent health, athletically oriented, and free of permanent injuries or ailments that impair functioning as a lifeguard.
- Ability to quickly assess emergencies and adopt effective courses of action, perform swimming rescues in dangerous conditions for extended periods.
- Knowledge of ocean conditions and hazards such as currents, surf, debris, reefs, and marine animals.
- Ability to maintain public relations and exercise control over groups of people.
Level 1: NF-02 Lifeguard Trainee
- Perform a 300-yard continuous swim using front crawl, breaststroke, or both; goggles allowed.
- Tread water for 2 minutes without support, using only legs, with hands under armpits, head above water.
- Swim 20 yards with a 10-pound object at 7-10 feet depth; goggles not allowed.
- Complete a series of tasks in 1 minute 40 seconds, including swimming 20 yards, surface diving to retrieve a 10-pound object at 7-10 feet, returning with the object, and exiting the water without assistance.
Level 2: NF-02 Lifeguard
- Be currently certified in Lifeguard Training/CPR for the Professional (Title 22) and Standard First Aid by the American Red Cross or equivalent.
- Pass skills and written tests, swim 300 yards.
- Ability to assess emergencies and communicate effectively.
- Understand and enforce rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Maintain public relations and control over groups.
Level 3: NF-02 Lifeguard/Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
- Same certifications as Level 2.
- Pass skills and written tests, swim 500 yards, demonstrate basic strokes.
- Assess emergencies, communicate effectively, and teach water safety, emergency response, and life support.
- Knowledge of safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous and bio-hazardous materials, and use of personal protective equipment.
