Job Overview

The Music Teacher at Bellarmine Preparatory School is responsible for providing high-quality instruction in music to students, fostering a positive and engaging learning environment, and contributing to the overall academic and moral development of students. The Music Teacher will inspire students to explore and appreciate the world of music, fostering creativity, discipline, and an understanding of the role of music in personal and communal expression, in alignment with Jesuit values. The teacher should embody the values and principles of Jesuit education, emphasizing the Ignatian philosophy of cura personalis (care for the whole person) and the Jesuit commitment to academic excellence, service, and justice.

The specific class load for this full-time position is somewhat flexible depending on the expertise of the eventual hire in collaboration with the existing Bellarmine Music Department. However, Bellarmine is especially desirous of candidates who will lead and grow a thriving high school choral program. Other possible responsibilities include liturgical music direction/coordination, high school and middle school orchestra, and/or collaboration with our band director on high school jazz, wind, and percussion courses.

Core Functions And Duties
  • Curriculum Development:
    • Design and implement a comprehensive and engaging music curriculum that aligns with national standards and reflects the school's mission.
    • Integrate Jesuit values and ethical considerations into the study of music.
  • Instruction and Classroom Management:
    • Conduct dynamic and interactive music classes, covering various aspects such as music theory, history, performance, and composition.
    • Provide students with opportunities to explore diverse musical genres and traditions.
    • Encourage students to explore their creative potential through music composition, improvisation, and individual or group projects.
    • Foster an understanding of the role of music as a form of personal and communal expression.
    • Integrate ethical discussions into music classes, encouraging students to reflect on the cultural and societal aspects of music.
    • Explore the role of music in promoting social justice and community engagement.
  • Assessment and Feedback:
    • Evaluate student performance through assessments, projects, and examinations.
    • Use formative assessment to inform instruction and help students self-assess their progress and summative assessments.
    • Assessments designed with the professional learning community.
    • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students, helping them understand their strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Student Support:
    • Provide additional support and guidance to students who may need assistance with music studies.
    • Mentor and advise students interested in pursuing further studies or careers in music.
  • Jesuit Values:
    • Integrate Ignatian values into daily interactions and classroom activities.
    • Actively contribute to the spiritual and moral development of students in alignment with Jesuit principles.
  • Collaboration and Professional Development:
    • Collaborate with other faculty members and staff to create a cohesive and supportive educational environment.
    • Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines to promote interdisciplinary learning experiences.
    • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and incorporate innovative instructional strategies.
    • Strong collaboration in professional learning communities that work towards common goals.
  • Community Involvement and Engagement:
    • Communicate effectively with parents, keeping them informed about students' progress and any concerns.
    • Actively participate in the school's faith community, attending religious events, Masses, and service projects.
    • Engage with the wider community to promote the school's mission and values.
    • Organize and direct school ensembles, such as choirs, bands, or orchestras, fostering a sense of community and teamwork among students.
    • Coordinate and participate in school-wide musical performances, concerts, and events.
    • Contribute to the long-term vision and strategic growth of the music program by helping to shape curriculum, recruit students, and secure resources, including grants, donations, or sponsorships.
    • Cultivate a culture of pride, inclusivity, and artistic excellence that encourages student leadership, creativity, and meaningful community engagement.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Music Education, Music Performance, or a related field.
  • Teaching certification or relevant education credentials.
  • Previous teaching experience, preferably at the high school level.
  • Familiarity with Jesuit education principles and a commitment to Bellarmine’s mission.
