Job summary

The New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) is hiring a Museum Gallery Attendant (MGA) to ensure a welcoming visitor experience and protect the collection. This full-time role involves monitoring galleries, enforcing policies, and engaging with the public about art and the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden.

Qualified applicants have customer service experience and an interest in visual arts; HS diploma or GED required; CPR/First Aid training preferred and training provided.

Qualifications

• Experience with customer service and interest in visual arts and museum work.
• Solid interpersonal and communication skills; ability to interact with visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
• Ability to assert oneself to enforce policies and protect artwork; maintain calm demeanor.

Responsibilities

• Maintain posts assigned to observe and engage and to ensure individuals are safe.
• Watch for and report irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking pipes, and unsecure doors or windows.
• Serve as an advocate for the visitor while promoting safety and assisting with museum resources and spaces.
• Interact with visitors in a positive and welcoming manner, including providing directions and information about collections, programs and events.
• Conduct gallery checks and perform opening and closing procedures; inspect galleries and surrounding areas for safety or security issues.
• Enforce all museum policies in a friendly manner and verify admission or staff status.
• Participate in daily briefings and regular training sessions for exhibitions and events.
• Remain informed about artwork on view and enhance visitor experience through conversation when appropriate.
• Maintain the highest level of professionalism in behavior and appearance.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

The Museum Gallery Attendant is a visitorservice-oriented position that is responsible for safeguarding visitors, staff,volunteers, the collection and the physical facility. The Museum GalleryAttendant is responsible for monitoring gallery spaces and protecting the artwhile engaging with the public to answer questions and provide informationabout NOMA. Museum Gallery Attendants ensure a positive museum experiencethrough exemplary customer service and education.

• Conduct gallery checks andperform opening and closing procedures; including inspection of theassigned galleries and surrounding areas to guarantee there are no safetyor security issues or concerns
• Enforce all museum policies in afriendly manner, ensure that all visitors entering the galleries haveeither purchased an admission ticket or are identified as staff or specialguests
• Participate in daily briefingsand attend regular training sessions for exhibitions, programming andother museum related events
• Remain informed and up-to-dateregarding artwork on view; enhance the visitor experience through engagingin conversation when appropriate
• Maintain the highest level ofprofessionalism in both behavior and appearance
• Perform other duties as assignedor required

Minimum Qualifications

• Experience with customer serviceand interest in visual arts and museum work
• High School diploma or GED;college, technical school, or experience in a position requiring safety orprotective work is helpful
• Solid interpersonal andcommunication skills; ability to interact with visitors of all ages,abilities, and economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds
• Ability to assert oneself whenneeded in order to enforce policies and protect artwork; maintain calm andprofessional demeanor for all visitor interactions
• First aid and CPR certificationpreferred; training will be provided
