Job summary

Museum of Miami seeks part-time Museum Educators to deliver programs, guide tours, and foster inclusive guest experiences across our galleries and events.

Ideal candidates will be flexible, able to engage diverse audiences, and comfortable presenting in multiple formats. A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent and reliable transportation are required; bilingual abilities are preferred.

Qualifications

  • Flexible schedule including weekends; minimum 4 days per week including evenings.
  • Ability to engage effectively with culturally diverse audiences of varying ages.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish and/or American Sign Language preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver museum programs such as tours and hands-on activities for all audiences.
  • Work on Community-Based programs as pursers and support staff.
  • Engage guests within galleries to enhance the museum experience.
  • Create a welcoming space by answering questions and sharing stories about Miami's cultural heritage.
  • Demonstrate effective communication with diverse groups, including groups of 30+.
  • Lead tours centering on students’ needs using inquiry and object-based learning for groups of 30 or more.
  • Assist with setup, delivery and breakdown of programs, member events and rentals.

Museum of Miami Educators are valued staff representing their individual communities and the wider South Florida region. They may be emerging museum professionals, hoping to learn more about how museums can serve a community, or former teachers and other professionals who wish to share their lived experience with new audiences. Museum Educators create a highly positive experience for museum visitors who are diverse in their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, abilities, and class while in our galleries and during programs and events. Museum Educators create a welcoming atmosphere for the visitor that encourages repeat visitation, support for the Museums mission through membership, and a positive view of the Museum that will be shared with family, friends, and neighbors.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Delivery of museum programs such as tours, hands-on activities, including assistance with performances, workshops, lectures, etc. to all audiences.
  • Working Community-Based programs as pursers and support staff.
  • Engage guests within museum galleries in active observation and discussion to enhance overall museum experience.
  • Creating a welcoming space for all visitors by answering questions, sharing stories about the cultural heritage of Miami, and maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of displays and exhibits.
  • Demonstrating effective communication skills in front of diverse groups that include children, families, students, seniors, and community stakeholders.
  • Leading socially conscience and culturally relevant tours in an engaging manner by centering students’ needs and utilizing inquiry and object-based learning for groups of 30 people or more.
  • Accommodating the needs of diverse visitors.
  • Assisting with the physical set-up, delivery and breakdown of museum programs, member events and rentals.
  • Stay up to date on museum policies and procedures to inform and assist visitors when needed.
  • Representing the museum and our community as a museum ambassador at local outreach events.
  • Participating in professional development opportunities hosted by Museum of Miami and partner organizations.
  • Being motivated to learn and to assist others in their own learning.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Adhering to dress code and attendance policy.
  • Assisting with other duties and special projects as assigned by Manager.
Qualifications:
  • Relevant experience in previous jobs, coursework, internships and volunteer work or a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant subject area.
  • Access to email and a valid driver’s license.
  • A flexible schedule that includes weekends, being available a minimum of 4 days a week, including evenings.
  • A cool, calm, pleasant demeanor that encourages conversation and engagement from the museum visitor.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with culturally diverse audiences and audiences of varying ages, including crowds and groups of 30 or more people.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish, English/Haitian Creole and/or American Sign Language preferred).
  • Museum Educators are required to maintain a minimum availability offour (4) days per week, which must include at least one weekend day (Saturday or Sunday). To meet scheduling needs, at least three (3) of the four available days must be unrestricted, meaning the employee is available to work any scheduled shift during operating hours, as well as before or after operating hours.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.

  • Being able to manage groups of 30 people or more.
  • Confidence working outdoors in the elements, with heights and enclosed spaces in addition to boats, and buses.
  • Extended periods of standing and walking required for gallery duties.
  • Driving to offsite programs and outreach events.
  • Occasional stooping, kneeling, bending, squatting/crouching, pushing/pulling, and reaching above the shoulders and lifting of up to 50 lbs.
  • Lifting and transporting of moderately heavy objects, such as boxes, tables, chairs, etc. will be required.
  • Being able to work programs/ events with mid-to-high noise levels such as performances, exhibition openings, festivals, etc.
Hourly wages breakdown:
  • There is a 3-month paid probationary period.
  • The base rate for all duties (including at off-site locations and during special events) is $18/hour.
  • A $25 per month traveling stipend is available after a 3-month paid probationary period.
  • Part-time employees are eligible for paid time off after one year of employment.
