Job summary

Sitka (CBS) — Finance seeks an Accounting Supervisor-Tax to oversee the municipal tax office, directing property and sales tax billing, collection, and reporting.

Under the Finance Director, the role exercises independent judgment, supervises one staff member, and collaborates with department heads to implement policies and support annual audits. The Accounting Supervisor-Tax requires strong knowledge of GAAP, GASB, fund accounting, and effective communication with staff and the public.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business or public administration, or related field of study.
• Five years of experience in governmental or public accounting, in public sector preferred.
• Any equivalent combination of experience, education, and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Responsibilities

• Oversees sales and property tax office operations
• Processes billing, accounting, and collections for property tax
• Processes billing, accounting, and collections for local improvement district/special assessments
• Makes or reviews all entries and reconciliations for sales and property tax into the general ledger
• Develops and manages property tax foreclosure process
• Develops and manages sales tax audit process
• Trains, assigns, prioritizes, supervises, motivates, and evaluates the work of the tax specialist
• Acts as initial point of contact for resolution of technical questions by accounting and other staff
• Assists in annual audit preparations by preparing confirmations, assist in answering auditor data and document requests, and preparing schedules as needed
• Acts as front office back up when the Tax Specialist is unavailable
• Perform other duties as assigned
