The Public Works Department has an outstanding opportunity to join our team and support Cary’s commitment to providing excellent service to our citizens as an Equipment Operator within our Solid Waste division. As a Solid Waste/Recycling Equipment Operator, you will have a unique opportunity to change lives through exceptional service.

The equipment operator position involves routine work in operating a fully automated collection truck for residential refuse and recyclables, requiring attention to surroundings during operation.

Work is scheduled on a four-day week, typically Monday through Thursday, 10 hours per day, under supervision of a Solid Waste Operations Coordinator. These positions are "critical," requiring reporting during adverse weather or emergencies to maintain operations.

Typical Tasks:

  • Operate a dual-drive, fully automated truck on residential routes, collecting refuse/recyclables.
  • Assist disabled customers with special pick-ups.
  • Use a mechanical arm to dump carts into the truck hopper, ensuring safety before proceeding.
  • Operate the packer to load and unload materials.
  • Drive routes, collecting from approximately 1,000 homes daily.
  • Transport loads to disposal facilities and perform pre/post trip inspections.
  • Complete activity logs and maintain the truck.
  • Respond to citizen inquiries about department procedures.
  • Other job-related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of traffic laws and safe operation of motorized/hydraulic equipment.
  • Skill in operating large collection trucks.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual work in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to understand instructions, read maps, and perform routine maintenance.

Physical Requirements:

  • Moderate physical work, including lifting and exposure to environmental conditions.
  • Agility to get in/out of trucks and operate controls.
  • Good vision and hearing to operate and monitor vehicle functions.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Three years of experience with motorized/hydraulic equipment operation.

Special Requirements:

  • Valid Class "B" CDL with acceptable driving record and air brake endorsement.
  • NIMS training (provided).
  • Background, drug tests, and reference checks required prior to employment.
