Job summary

AlphaGov is seeking a Public Safety Compensation Analyst to develop police and fire pay recommendations as part of a municipal compensation study. The analyst will evaluate pay structures, benchmark departments, and design salary plans to support recruitment, retention, and internal equity.

This role requires experience with public safety compensation, including rank structures, step progression, specialty pay, and pay compression.

Qualifications

• Strong analytical skills with ability to translate data into actionable pay recommendations.
• Experience applying compensation principles to police and fire departments.
• Ability to benchmark roles across jurisdictions and analyze rank structures.

Responsibilities

• Review police and fire classifications, salary schedules, pay policies, and labor agreements.
• Benchmark comparable jurisdictions and benchmark positions by responsibilities, rank, and scope.
• Analyze base salaries, ranges, step progression, incentives, and specialty pays across schedules.
• Assess market competitiveness, internal equity, and pay compression within and between ranks.
• Recommend pay structures and progression approaches aligned with operational needs.
• Develop cost estimates and implementation options for proposed pay schedules.
• Present findings and recommendations to municipal leadership and officials.
• Demonstrate experience designing pay plans for municipal police or fire departments.
• Conduct salary benchmarking within municipal compensation studies.
• Explain compensation findings clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences.
• Evaluate both police and fire compensation, including union and nonunion environments.
