Job summary

The City of Sioux Falls is seeking an Engineering Technician to join our engineering team. In this role, you will assist in planning, design, and management of municipal infrastructure, especially sanitary sewer systems, with strong GIS skills.

Graduation from high school or GED plus a two-year engineering technology course is required; a valid driver’s license is also needed. You will work with engineers, project managers, and staff to ensure standards compliance and project success.

Qualifications

• Must have a high school diploma or GED with a 2-year engineering technology program.
• Knowledge of surveying methods, standards, and paraprofessional design.
• Ability to read and enforce city specifications and ordinances.
• Proficiency with GIS, CAD tools, and asset management software.

Responsibilities

• Inspect sanitary sewer, water main, storm sewer, street lighting, traffic signals, fiber-optic, sidewalk, and roadway systems for conformity with plans and policies.
• Receive and respond to engineering inquiries from the public and contractors with good customer service.
• Perform surveying tasks including construction staking, topography, and boundary surveys; act as survey crew leader.
• Review plans for compliance with design standards and city ordinances.
• Prepare reports, estimates, maps, and data for department projects.
• Perform drafting work using CAD or GIS-based programs.
• Monitor and maintain asset management and GIS records for utilities and streets.
• Prepare plans and specifications; enter data to maps and programs for project assignments.
• Assist engineers with traffic counts, speed studies, and travel-time studies; maintain fiber-optic and signals systems.
• Perform other duties as needed.
