Job summary

The City of Boston seeks an Assistant Corporation Counsel II to represent the City, its officials, and its departments in civil actions, arbitrations, administrative hearings, and negotiations. The ACC II will advise leaders on municipal law matters and draft ordinances, contracts, and memoranda under supervision.

Minimum qualifications include a J.D., at least three years of legal experience, MA licensure, and strong writing and communication skills.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree required.
• At least three years of experience as a lawyer in a law firm or government setting.
• Licensed to practice in Massachusetts with no disciplinary record.
• Excellent writing and organizational skills; strong communication.
• Proficiency with Westlaw, Microsoft Office, and Social Law Library.

Responsibilities

• Manages a caseload and represents the City in state and federal court, administrative proceedings, and other venues.
• Provides representation in matters including personal injury, civil rights, contracts, education, and discipline appeals.
• Advises city leaders on municipal law, policy matters, procurement, open meeting laws, and records laws.
• Participates in law department engagements with City departments on complex legal issues.
• Performs legal research, writes opinions, and assists in drafting contracts, ordinances, and memoranda.
• Performs specialized municipal law functions in areas such as workers’ compensation, tax foreclosures, public construction, and education.
• Supports other attorneys as needed and performs related duties.
