Job summary

The City of Boston Law Department seeks an Assistant Corporation Counsel to represent the City, Boston Fire Department, Boston Police Department, and Boston Public Schools before federal and state courts and agencies. The Attorney will perform legal research, draft and review ordinances, and prepare opinions in civil actions, arbitrations, and administrative hearings.

Qualifications

Juris Doctor degree required.
Licensed to practice in Massachusetts with no disciplinary record.
Up to two years of experience as a lawyer in a law firm or governmental legal office.
Accuracy and attention to detail.
Strong interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communication skills.
Proficient with Microsoft Office, Westlaw, and Social Law Library.

Responsibilities

Provide in-house counsel representation and legal support to City departments.
Manage a caseload and represent the City and departments in assigned cases.
Conduct all court proceedings for City departments at trial and appellate levels.
Prepare ordinances and perform legal research; render opinions on legal issues in civil actions, arbitrations, and hearings.
Draft and review ordinances; provide advice on municipal law matters, negotiation, procurement, and public records matters.
