Job summary

The City of Columbia, Missouri is seeking an Assistant City Counselor to provide legal services and advisory support across municipal law areas for the City, staff, and elected officials. You will draft contracts, opinions, and legal documents, and represent the City in litigation and administrative hearings as needed.

You will conduct research, prepare complex documents, and collaborate with city departments. A JD and relevant experience are required, with local government exposure preferred.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor from accredited program required.
• 3 years’ legal experience is required; experience in local government or public sector law preferred.
• Other relevant work experience or training may substitute for legal experience.

Responsibilities

• Provide professional legal services to the City under supervision of the City Counselor, Deputy City Counselor or City Prosecutor.
• Conduct legal research, review and draft contracts, legislation, memorandums, pleadings and discovery responses.
• Render sound written and oral opinions.
• Advise on land use, zoning, police, airports, utilities, public health, taxation, real estate, environmental and personnel issues.
