Job summary

Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck seeks a Policy Analyst to join its State & Local Government Relations practice in Tampa, FL or New York City. You will support a multistate team tracking and analyzing legislation, covering hearings, and researching issues for clients in state legislatures nationwide.

The role requires strong writing, research, and client-facing skills, with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of work experience, including at least 1 year in government or agency work or relevant private sector experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Experience with state legislatures, state government agencies, political campaigns, advocacy and lobbying, and policy research and analysis.
  • Strong computer and research skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and balance priorities.
  • Ability to engage clients and government officials professionally.

Responsibilities

  • Proactively monitor, track, and report legislative, regulatory, and policy developments across multiple states.
  • Provide virtual coverage of state legislative hearings as needed.
  • Produce written summaries and weekly policy briefs for clients.
  • Coordinate client meetings with state legislators and agencies.
  • Lead Brownstein policy team meetings and coordinate engagement efforts for clients.
  • Perform other research and duties as required.

We have an immediate need for a Policy Analyst to join our State & Local Government Relations practice in either our Tampa, FL or New York City office. This position will support our multistate government relations team tracking and analyzing legislation, covering hearings and researching issues for our clients in state legislatures across the country and in all 50 states.

We are seeking a proven self-starter with the ability to think strategically and critically, anticipate needs, and provide proactive, high-level customer service to both clients and senior staff. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage clients and government officials in a mature and professional manner are essential. Successful candidates will demonstrate an understanding of the current political landscape, along with outstanding writing and organizational abilities supported by strong research and analytical skills and close attention to detail. The ideal candidate must be able to work independently while thriving in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

The candidate selected for this position may also be asked to take responsibility for other duties that fall outside of the essential job functions, listed below.

  • Proactively monitor, track, and report legislative, regulatory, and broader policy and political developments to senior team members and clients across multiple states, up to and including all 50 states, depending on client needs.
  • Provide virtual coverage of state legislative hearings across the country as needed to meet client needs
  • Produce a variety of written communications for internal and external audiences, with a focus on timely, succinct legislative and regulatory hearing summaries that distill critical information under tight deadlines, along with weekly policy development briefs for clients.
  • Participate in regular calls with clients and, as needed, provide the client real‑time updates and/or prepare background materials for the team members who represent the client
  • Coordinate meetings for clients with state legislators, government agencies, or with third party groups
  • Candidate will eventually be asked to take greater responsibility for coordinating and leading Brownstein policy team meetings and organizing the team’s engagement efforts on behalf of clients
  • Perform other research and duties as required
Required and Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 2 years of work experience, including at least 1 year of government or agency experience or relevant private sector experience and exceptional writing skills are required
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Experience working with state legislatures, state government agencies, political campaigns, advocacy and lobbying, and/or policy research and analysis
  • Strong computer and research skills
  • Ability to work well under pressure and balance competing priorities
  • Ability to engage clients and government officials in a mature, professional manner
  • Experience with Quorum or similar legislative tracking software
Compensation and Benefits

Brownstein offers a benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, 401k + match, profit sharing, and vacation/sick/personal time off. In addition, this role pays overtime for hours worked above 40 per week. We are offering a salary for this role in the range of $70,000–$80,000. The actual salary is determined by the assigned level and corresponding experience, in accordance with our established salary steps.
