Job summary

The University of Minnesota's Research Animal Resources (RAR) department seeks an Animal Care Manager to oversee animal care operations across 13 facilities in our AAALAC-accredited program. The role leads up to 8 Animal Care Supervisors and 1 Operations Coordinator, guiding staff and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Located on the Twin Cities campus, this essential management position focuses on high-quality care, staff development, and strategic operational improvements across diverse husbandry

Qualifications

• BA/BS degree or higher with relevant experience in animal care operations.
• LAT level certification (LATG/CMAR) preferred or required.
• Minimum 2 years of direct managerial experience of full-time staff.
• Experience with unions and HR-related matters is a plus.
• Familiarity with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office is expected.

Responsibilities

• Direct supervision of up to 8 Animal Care Supervisors and 1 Operations Coordinator.
• Oversee day-to-day animal care operations across multiple facilities to ensure high-quality care.
• Ensure compliance with USDA, OLAW, IACUC and AAALAC standards through policies and SOPs.
• Provide performance feedback, development plans, and mentorship to staff.
• Oversee hiring and staffing levels to maintain coverage and prevent burnout.
• Lead complex, husbandry-related projects and process improvements.
• Coordinate cross-unit communication with Veterinary Services, Infrastructure, and Training teams.
