Job summary

The New York Public Library is seeking a Junior Library Custodian to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment across multiple Bronx network branches. The role involves routine cleaning, floor care, light maintenance, and reporting to the Facilities department.

You will travel between branches, handle snow removal, and support emergency prep while adhering to safety procedures. A high school diploma or GED and a valid driver’s license are required, with union Local 374 supporting this

Qualifications

• Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
• Experience in basic custodial or building maintenance work.
• Knowledge of safety procedures and MSDS.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform manual labor.

Responsibilities

• Cleans and maintains library buildings and grounds.
• Buffs, strips and waxes floors.
• Shampoos carpets.
• Replaces light bulbs.
• Handles snow removal.
• Prepares maintenance reports and inventory of cleaning supplies.
• Escalates issues to appropriate personnel during emergencies.
• Communicates with Library Manager to determine branch needs.
• Travels between branches within the West Bronx network.
• May be assigned to two sites and other locations as needed.
