Job summary

The New York Public Library seeks a Junior Library Custodian to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment across its network of branches in NYC. The role requires physical labor, routine floor care, light bulb replacement, and snow removal as needed.

You will travel between branches within the East Manhattan Network and report to the Cleaning Operations Coordinator. Applicants should have a High School Diploma or GED, a valid driver's license, and prior custodial experience.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
• Prior basic custodial/building superintendent work.
• Experience with cleaning materials and equipment used in commercial buildings.
• Knowledge of MSDS, safety practices and procedures.
• Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Cleans and maintains the Library building and grounds.
• Buffs, strips and waxes floors.
• Shampoos carpets.
• Replaces light bulbs.
• Handles snow removal.
• Prepares maintenance reports and inventories cleaning supplies.
• Safeguards the building during emergencies and escalates issues to appropriate personnel.
• Communicates with Library Manager to determine branch needs.
• Travels between branches within assigned network.
• Will be assigned to two sites and may be assigned to work at other locations as needed.
